Where Do You Go for Hair Loss Help?

Where do you go for hair loss help?  You can’t just look up “hair loss doctor” in the Yellow Pages, and it’s hard to find someone who specializes in hair loss. People are constantly doing research and looking for better ways to treat hair loss, and when you’re looking for hair loss help, you want someone who is up on the most recent research and advances in the field.

The Internet

The best place to start is to educate yourself, and the best place to do that is on the Internet.  That’s because with all the new information coming out about hair loss, the information at the library is probably out of date.

As with any information on the Internet, make sure your sources are reliable.  You should probably take the information on “Bob’s Miracle Hair Growth Treatment” site with a grain of salt.  Look for information on health education and medical sites.

Your Barber or Hairdresser

Hair care professionals have training in ways to treat and prevent hair loss.  They can also recommend products to make your hair appear thicker and fuller.  You may be surprised at how much hair loss help you can get with your next haircut.

A Trichologist

Say, what?  I’ll bet you’ve never heard of that.  A trichologist is a hair care professional with special training in hair loss treatments – self-explanatory as to why you’d want to talk to one, huh?

The Drugstore

You can find lots of hair loss help at the drugstore.  The pharmacist may be able to suggest some products for you, and you can purchase products specifically made to help hair loss.

Your Primary Health Care Practitioner

Your primary care physician or nurse practitioner can prescribe products for hair loss that you cannot get on your own.  He can also diagnose the cause for your hair loss.  He may order some tests to decide if there is an underlying problem causing your hair loss and do a physical exam.  After the test results come back, he may prescribe medications or he may refer you to a specialist.

A Dermatologist

A dermatologist is probably the closest thing to a medical hair care specialist that you will find.  There are a few dermatologists who specialize in hair loss help, but not very many.  Most are located in larger population centers, and you will probably wait several months before you can get an appointment.  Even dermatologists who don’t offer specialized hair loss help are well trained and can treat most people who are losing their hair.

A Board Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon

These are usually plastic surgeons who have additional specialty training in hair restoration surgery.  The perform hair transplants.  Sometimes they have complete clinics where you can get cosmetic and medical hair loss help.

Finding hair loss help takes some detective work.  Educate yourself and ask questions.  Talk to a barber or hairdresser, or to your primary health care provider.  Call a few dermatologists and ask what experience they have in treating hair loss.  Be your own advocate, and you will find the hair loss help you are looking for.
